Malayan Tigers - Saturday at the San Diego Zoo

Some days things just come together the way they should . . . yesterday at the San Diego Zoo was one of those days.  When I got to the tigers at 9am, Connor was out in the big enclosure, and the sunlight was filtering through the trees at just the right angle.

Connor alternated between napping at the lower window and wandering all over the place.  There were a few times where I had to wait over an hour for something to happen, but it was worth it.  Meanwhile, his younger brothers Cinta and Berani spent most of the day crashed out.  I had to settle for something a bit more abstract with them.

What Do You Get A Tiger For His Birthday?

It's probably not a question many of us think to ask, but . . . what do you get a full-grown Malayan Tiger for his birthday present.

Well, food is always good.  In this case, a rather large beef shank.  Maybe to add a bit of excitement you hang it from a supposedly tiger-proof stretchy-bungie-cord-thingy from a company called Aussie Dog Products.  April 2, 2016 was Connor the Malayan Tiger's fifth birthday.

It didn't take long at all for Connor to strip the several pounds of meat from that bone.

Then he decided he would rather chew on the bone in the shade of the tree, so he had to get it off the bungie, or break the supposedly tiger-proof bungie.

To give credit to Aussie Dog Products, it was strong enough to support his 300 lbs. weight while he was swinging from it, but in the end, with enough stretching and leverage by pulling it around the tree, he was able to snap it and take his bone where he wanted it.

I think this is about where I overheard a keeper say something  like "well, there goes a few hundred dollars".
