Sometimes . . . They Never Show Up

The early afternoon light in the Mandrill habitat at the San Diego Zoo can be particularly nice this time of year . . . and last Saturday was no exception.  A friend and I spent about an hour standing there waiting for Jasper, the big male Mandrill, to wander over to where we were.  We could tell that the light would be about perfect for a portrait of him, especially when he got close to his swinging rope thingy.  

He stayed on the other side, pretty much out of our sight, the entire time.  But, the light on the swinging rope thingy was still really nice . . . even if there wasn't a Mandrill to go with it.

     

Snow Leopard - San Diego Zoo

Here are a couple of recent pictures of one of the Snow Leopards at the San Diego Zoo.  It was mid-day, she seemed to be in a very relaxed mood . . . but still paying attention to what was going on around her.

       

Some New Pictures of Connor the Tiger

Here are a few new pictures of Connor, the Malayan Tiger at the San Diego Zoo, from last weekend.

Green Lizard - San Diego Zoo

I found this green lizard in the stand of flowers where I was watching for hummingbirds on Saturday morning.

     

Warty Pig - San Diego Zoo

Not too long ago they put a few Warty Pigs in with the Malaysian Tapir.  They seem to get along fine together.  I got a quick shot of one of the Warty Pigs on my way to the tigers this weekend.

     

More Hummingbirds - San Diego Zoo

I went back this past weekend to try for more hummingbird pictures.  If you stand there without moving, after a while they get used to your presence and will come in fairly close.

It looks like they dig their whole head into these purple flowers.

There were also a bunch of beetles in the plants as well.

Peacock - San Diego Zoo

This peacock was showing off just inside the entrance of the San Diego Zoo on Sunday morning.

     

Hummingbirds

Hummingbirds are great fun to watch.  I spotted these in the landscaping just outside the entrance to the San Diego Zoo last weekend.  They're really quick.
